India leads world in cutting internet access for 5th year in a row
- villgax 4y agoWeirdly enough they block cellular internet not leased lines or home connections. No wonder the internet was not spawned in India
- toast0 4y agoThat's pretty common for government shutdowns in general. Usually they're looking to disrupt communications, but not businesses. Sometimes it's just the ease of telling a limited number of companies to shut things down; leased lines especially tend to be hard to shut down in a centralized way. Of course, for India in Jammu and Kashmir, they historically only cut off prepaid cell service. If you had postpaid, you were fine. I think that may have changed with more recent shutoffs? Or maybe just the proportion of customers with postpaid has dropped; I'm not affiliated with India, just interested in global telecom because of work.
- 2Gkashmiri 4y agoyeah, that one is really puzzling. There is NO difference in KYC/FTUE/SIGNUP of pre-paid or post-paid SIM cards. You do the same process for both and its a matter of "choosing", new sim cards are now by default pre-on-post (whatever the hell that means) so we don't understand why would they ban them and not others. pre-paid sim cards DO NOT mean the same as in american movies where you go to a store and buy a mobile phone with preloaded, pre activated sim card for $20.
- 2Gkashmiri 4y agoha ha ha. you know, for someone who has been seeing internet shutdowns since 2010 if i remember correctly, it has changed my outlook on internet. I don't use "connected" features any more than email and like. IOT is out of question unless it can be fully operated by home assistant. I don't use "cloud backups" and instead rely on local hardware. I don't use google docs/ office online for the same reason. Software that is used in my work, it MUST be able to be run fully offline as a primary requirement because of "uncertainty".
- sarimkhalid 4y agoCan only feel the pain....
- sumanthvepa 4y agoSo do you face the same problems if you use a landline connection? I live in South India, so obviously my situation is a little different. Generally my internet connection is pretty rock solid reliable.
- 2Gkashmiri 4y agowhat do you mean landline connection?
