What keeps triggering earthquakes in Turkey?
- simonblack 4y agoThe same thing that causes a squeal when your rubber shoe rubs along a smooth floor. That's not a smooth rub. It's 'grab-release, grab-release, grab-release, ....' until friction finally stops the movement. The number of 'grab-release' cycles depends on the starting force and the amount of friction. The amount of starting force depends on the amount of movement in the tectonic plates. Fast tectonic plates rubbing together cause lots of earthquakes, slower tectonic plates cause fewer earthquakes. Some places have earthquakes so rarely - very little tectonic movement, and some places seem to have them all the time - lots of tectonic activity. See 'Ring of Fire'.
