I had a similar experience. I used it years ago, then I went back to it a little while back and ended up quitting for two reasons:
1. The gamification was too cutesy and annoying. And gamification works on me - I'm currently being held prisoner by my streak on another platform.
2. I didn't feel it was actually teaching me. I was being tested on words that hadn't been introduced. Trial and error is not a fun way to learn.
- nicky0 4y agoDuolingo never tests you on new brand words in my experience. Whenever a new word is introduced, it is "clickable" (touchable?) in the sentence to show the definition. Maybe that's just my course though. Sometimes the new words are highlighed, other times (if I spend 20 gems for a "harder" lesson) they are not highlighted but still clickable. The only time words are not clickable is during the legenrday challenges. I guess this is where you are seeing them.
