The article misses the huge point that one important regulatory requirement is ACCESSIBILITY. If somebody said “gee boss I’d love to come to the office but as a double amputee it takes me awhile to get to work in the morning, could I work from home” the boss would go “aw shucks I am a true ally but we just can’t make these accommodations without the business facing undue hardship trying to meet all these regulatory requirements. If we accommodate you and our business goes under that’s sadly no good for anybody”.
After COVID none of that flies anymore so work from home will increasingly be mandated by legislation and as regulatory costs increase as a result the author misidentifies what will be cut in the long term. They’re absolutely correct that the regulatory costs of work from home and office work simultaneously will be a large burden that will drag down companies that try to juggle both but they misidentify which of those things are necessary and which of those things are frivolous.
