Many people seem to feel that treating gender as (mostly) binary is a form of discrimination akin to racism or sexism in the early 20th century. They try to compensate for this by being extra mindful of the matter by adjusting their language and raising awareness wherever possible.
However, this is not comparable to the depth and harm that was and sometimes still is done by racism and sexism. As a result, the matter gets more prominence than the actual prevalence of cases would warrant.
This misguided activism might play a part in pushing young people to decisions as described in the article.
