In my high-school ,circa 2008, the same rule would and has been applied to suspended students,regardless of the reasontheyweresuspended. I agree law enforcement action against students is a problematic, and I offer no solution. However, the tone of your comment feels eh.. Like it's trying to say something without saying it. Apologies if I'm misreading it.
There are always going to be touchy subjects as social and cultural history moves forward. I knew a few kids that got suspended for threatening to blow up the school after 9/11.
Sucks that kids can't make mistakes without overblown consequences, though.
