Google's news-blocking test in Canada a 'terrible mistake', says PM Trudeau
- hunglee2 4y agoNot sure what Trudeau thinks he can do here - surely a foreign government cannot compel a private company to not only provide service but actually transfer revenue in the course of doing so? As an aside, less news is general is probably a good thing in general, so there's an 'alls well that ends well' scenario here
- brokenmachine 4y agoYes, they can. See: Australia. Google is forced by the govt to pay Murdoch for showing their articles in search results. Google is not allowed to not index those pages! https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/feb/17/news-corp-agrees-deal-with-google-over-payments-for-journalism https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/feb/17/news-corp-agre... I believe the legislation is active.
- water-your-self 4y agoThey can prohibit foreign companies from doing business inside their borders pretty easily. Less news is very worrysome. Do you own google stock?

- aquarium87 4y agoNot sure what's being squabbles over here, but certainly whoever wrote this story doesn't deserve to get paid. (for failing to explain anything sufficiently) The definition of news has changed. Big organizations get big stories so wrong so often that the "press" should probably die, and independent content creators have their day in the sun. Sure, there will be information, and some of it will be wrong. But that's no different than now. The scam is pretending the press isn't fully captured and hates certain people. The scam is forcing people to pay the press to hate on them.
- steponlego 4y agoCanada has turned into some kind of nightmare bizarro-land, the UK and Australia are also leading the way. I think they're harmonizing with China for the inevitable merger.
