We may actually be even more badly prepared, with populations being more skeptical of government, especially given repeated policy oscillations from various administrations, as well as continued divergence over which mitigation strategy has proved to be most effective

There's a sharp distinction between evolving understanding as additional information emerges ... and intentional misrepresentation for self-serving purposes. Both factors were manifest in the case of the COVID-19 global pandemic. They are not, however, the same, they have different etiologies, evolutions, and outcomes, and really should be clearly distinguished in discussion.
