I suspect, that you are right. Anywhere in Europe a helicopter will be with you in less than an hour, cell phone reception is pretty common in the mountains, everybody is looking after „newcomers“. Even finding a 50 mile hike would be a challenge. In America, like you said, far more danger await the unsuspecting and distances are generally far greater.
