There are records of abortion going back thousands of years.

  Sure but how many of those were ~guaranteed to only abort the pregnancy and not also kill or maim the woman? I know there's lots of things you can do to cause an abortion throughout history, but as far as I know they mostly did it by poisoning the mother enough that she miscarried.
