> Why would they?
They could annihilate all competition in the market except for them. Every single Android phone would be forced to use subpar manufacturing from there on out.
- colinmorelli 4y agoThe FTC would likely block the transaction precisely because of this. If they didn't block it, Apple would - upon doing the above - immediately subject themselves to anti-trust litigation from a lot of parties with a lot of money. Really hard to see this working out well for them.
- thefounder 4y agoEU and the US would not accept a merger in the first place.
- jnk345u8dfg9hjk 4y agowhy is the EU involved?
- csunbird 4y agoif Apple wants to sell their products in EU, they have to listen what EU says.
- warrenm 4y agoIt's a Taiwanese company Why do you think the US or EU would get involved?
- eppp 4y agoThey just choose to do it now?
- meepmorp 4y ago> Every single Android phone would be forced to use subpar manufacturing from there on out. Isn't that kind of how it is already?
- etempleton 4y agoSo Apple would spend probably over 100 billion dollars to buy TSMC and make them a less profitable company by not serving other companies? All this would do would weaken TSMC and strengthen other chip manufacturers for a couple years of absolute chip dominance. But they already have chip dominance, so it is for essentially zero gain.
- bioemerl 4y ago> make them a less profitable company by not serving other companies? They become part of apple. With a stranglehold on chips the price of apple products as a whole, or their sales, will skyrocket.
- etempleton 4y agoWould they? Apple already has the best chips. What makes you think that the average consumer cares that much about even a 20-30% performance difference. It is not like TSMC is the only competent chip manufacturer. Nvidia largely uses Samsung and they are doing just fine.
- bioemerl 4y agoApple already has the best chips, but in this case no one else would have them. Samsung is not doing fine, Nvidia switched off of them after a single generation because their process isn't very good.
- scarface74 4y agoThey honestly already have. They make 80% of the profit in the cell phone market. And even their low end SE is two years ahead of the competition in performance. Besides buying a major supplier out and then getting rid of their other customers is value destructive.
