Why is Twitter turning millions of accounts into defenseless targets?
- Arnt 4y agoA one-sentence summary: "Switching to another 2FA method is simple, the other methods are better and people should switch, but forcing them to do it is really bad". Uhm. I'd like it better if they were to give users a week or three from when they log in and see the message, but really, calling this idiocracy is over the top. They're going to reduce the security of <2% of users to the level that 97% of users voluntarily use.
- jki275 4y agoThat article is really biased article that misses the main point. Twitter is being scammed by people abusing its 2FA SMS system (which should be deprecated anyway), and they're shutting off non-paying users' ability to continue to run this scam. Anybody serious about 2FA isn't using sms for it anyway, and that should have been deprecated long ago.
- Am4TIfIsER0ppos 4y agoOh no not the precious twitter accounts! I thought everyone hated twitter now that Elon Musk took over.
- amluto 4y agoPresumably Twitter got annoyed at the fees. Twilio charges $0.0079 per US outgoing message. Twitter claimed 330M monthly active users. If each of them got one SMS per month, that’s $2.6M per month. For a company that’s trying to avoid paying rent and skimping on janitorial services, that’s a lot of money. Of course, Twitter surely pays a lot less than the Twilio advertised price. But a cost center is a cost center, and Twitter really wants to get rid of cost centers right now.
