  If you consider just the original borders of the city from 1850 today, that sliver would probably be one of the densest cities in California with the most transit access per capita, and you'd be somewhere in this thread talking about how LA is doing it right. That being said, at least the sprawl in a lot of LA county is basically done thanks to geography, bounded by ocean or protected mountains. Only one way to go now: up.
