I live in Australia and I'm very comfortable spending a lot less that $70k now. I think the gov and media like to inflate the numbers to try and scare people making sure they have a massive war chest. I know plenty of people living pretty good lives on the age pension which is less than $30K. If you have your own house, in good health, don't drink, smoke or play the pokies, you could enjoy your retirement on $30k easily.
