Pretty much this.
That's why I mentioned Costco because I wanted to specifically attack those encouraging wasteful behavior. Forcing people to buy in bulk is a form of that but that's just one thing they do. The giant sizes of their stores, focus on making it cheap and convenient to buy gas, and providing a status symbol that's about acquiring cheap stuff are others.
- Dalewyn 4y agoBuying in bulk is more efficient in general. If you want to screech about consumerism you're barking up the wrong tree.
- benatkin 4y agoOnly when you need stuff and don't waste it. Costco is waste city from what I've seen.
- Dalewyn 4y agoHave you tried incorporating Costco into your life? You sound like you never did, only saying "I don't need 24 rolls of toilet paper at once, that's wasteful." as an outsider.
- benatkin 4y agoYeah. I found that there are a lot of places that let you buy in bulk or not in bulk at the same place. A wonderful example of this is H Mart, a Korean grocery chain. I also found that Costco's selection sucks and I would often leave not getting what I went in there to buy.
- Dalewyn 4y agoCostco doesn't have a wide selection because the idea is Costco only sells good stuff. You don't need to think because whatever Costco has is purported to be good by Costco's standards which presumably go above the standard of average consumers. If you are looking for things Costco doesn't carry, it is what it is. If your needs or desires line up with Costco's selection though, then there's no better place in terms of both price and efficiency of procurement. If you find stuff from Costco is going to waste (namely foodstuffs, almost everything else they carry is non-perishable), just throw them all in the freezer. They will last months if not years.

- benatkin 4y ago> Costco doesn't have a wide selection because the idea is Costco only sells good stuff. This is where you get deeper into Wall-E territory. A lot of their "good stuff" is junk food. And a lot of people eat more of it when it's lying around their houses. And really it's only "good stuff" because it's brand name. There are better tasting chocolate bars with less packaging than Hershey's Nuggets.
- Dalewyn 4y agoCostco has everything from raw foods to processed foods. You want to cook and eat healthy? They have it. You just want to microwave something and be done with it? They have it. If you get junk food from Costco, that's because you bought junk food.
- sudhirc 4y ago> If you get junk food from Costco, that's because you bought junk food But isn't the argument was that Costco carries good stuff?
- Dalewyn 4y agoThere's good junk food and bad junk food; whatever junk food Costco carries is presumably good junk food. The "junk" in junk food isn't talking about the quality (good/bad) thereof.
- Ekaros 4y agoI think toilet paper is bad example. Properly stored it doesn't go bad. The perishables like food items and so on are the bad thing. They have more limited lifespan or spoil in various ways more easily.
- throwawayacc5 4y agoIf only there was some kind of technology to keep perishable food cold/frozen in your home so it doesn't go bad.
- benatkin 4y agoI know right? Those devices are amazing. And I've never seen one run out of space. And none of the expiration dates apply to refrigerated food. That's how long you can leave it outside the fridge.
- throwawayacc5 4y ago>And I've never seen one run out of space. If only there was a way to have more than one location to store frozen foods in a home. >And none of the expiration dates apply to refrigerated food They don't. "Use or freeze by". >That's how long you can leave it outside the fridge. Which you wouldn't do if you're not using it.
- kayfox 4y agoBuying in bulk reduces the amount of packaging you get with your stuff. If its going bad before using it, thats on you to manage. There are plenty of ways to avoid food going bad, from storing it properly to planning out what your going to use when.
