China’s FAST telescope reveals unprecedented details of Milky Way (2022)
- SiempreViernes 4y agoMan, I wish the Chinese were better at publishing their results! We just get two low resolution images and there isn't even a title of the article this was supposedly published in :( I tried scanning through the issues from this year of "Science China Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy" but nothing looked like it was an actual FAST result paper (only one mentioned FAST in the title, and that was an instrumentation paper). Funny to see that "Science China Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy" is actually an English language Springer publication, as the title makes it sound like something they'd put out locally.

- defrost 4y agoNice one! I looked to Sci-Hub and forgot about the obvious - thanks for adding in downloadable links and full titles.

- jharohit 4y agoall original high res data & images here [1] https://fast.bao.ac.cn/ https://fast.bao.ac.cn/ [2] http://zmtt.bao.ac.cn/GPPS/GPPSnewPSR.html http://zmtt.bao.ac.cn/GPPS/GPPSnewPSR.html
- SiempreViernes 4y agoIs that something you know, or something you are guessing? In particular [2] explicitly says at the top that it is a bunch of new pulsars, so it would be very surprising to find large skymaps there. I tried looking at [1], but they don't make it easy finding the skymap.

- natpalmer1776 4y agoI would imagine (purely speculation) that anything of substance coming from chinese research institutions would be kept from western circulation, or at the very least heavily altered or redacted to retain any competitive advantage the research might possibly have. Given how 'vertically integrated' the government is with the entire economy, it would make sense to see similar behavior from them as you would a corporate entity. The odd whitepaper may surface saying "We have this cool new thing" but technical details necessary to implement that cool new thing will be sparse or missing entirely. Everything is kept under lock and key as trade secrets.

- natpalmer1776 4y agoSure that’s possible, but the problem lies in the fact that to the casual outside observer the two situations are indistinguishable. Any party with the resources and cause to dig deeper than that (e.g. national agency) will usually also have their interests aligned in keeping any discovered knowledge of chinese proficiency a secret from the layman.
