Even offering empty human platitudes and condolences is taking attention away from the precursors and causes of the tragedy. An email reminding victims families that it happened doesn't provide closure, it doesn't stop it from happening to the next kid, and in fact, it serves a normative role and gives us a lens through which we moralize the violence rhetorically.
