For doing work that nobody knows exactly how to accomplish (eg going into the unknown), one iterates towards a solution by getting feedback through casually discuss ideas, listen to others seminars, and formally discuss in in-Person Meetings. Virtual takes away a lot of those serendipitous opportunities. That being said, there are times when virtual is fine, eg once a project is well-defined and one needs to just deliver, or when doing admin paper work, or when reading.
