From my perspective, this is the type of opinion piece that continues to erode whatever limited trust many people that are distrustful of the media might have. The article rushes in to name-calling and straw man arguments without a good faith effort to understand some of the concerns that the opposition might have. I'm not from the UK and don't understand the local concerns there in full. I wish the piece attempted to put forth a good faith effort in understanding and conveying some of these concerns and the counterpoints in a serious way.
As a generality though, I can sympathize with people who are extremely concerned about freedom of movement being eroded. This isn't a theoretical concern anymore: we saw during Covid that some people were banned from traveling too far away from their house, or even were required to text government officials before leaving your house for any reason. I can sort of understand that after this dystopian time period, some people are very distrustful of anything that sounds like it might even hypothetically limit or erode freedom of movement, because I'm concerned about this as well.
And I'm saying this as somebody that thinks cities with lots of shops and other areas of interest within a walkable distance are great. But I do understand being extremely vigilant about basic freedoms right now and anything that might take that away again.
