Taking the Tesla to Truro? Warnings over lack of electric charging points
- mytailorisrich 4y agoThis is Cornwall so I have the bad feeling that the issue is more serious than 'just' building more charging points at popular locations: I suspect in many cases they'd need to upgrade the electric subsystems first.
- simonblack 4y agoI suspect in many cases they'd need to upgrade the electric subsystems first. THIS is the unspoken problem that vendors of EVs are trying to hide. If we eventually require millions of EVs to be recharged daily, ALL of the electrical subsystems in the country will have to be upgraded first. Tourist destinations will be the 'canary in the coalmine' as the problem will very likely show up in those locations first, when tens of thousands of over-nighters will require recharging within a very short period overnight. Lots and lots of MEGAwatt-hours have to be obtained from somewhere.
- mytailorisrich 4y agoIt seems that charging points are rated in the range 25-50kWh (depending on whether they are 'fast' or not) so one fast public charging point will pull more when in use that a standard house. So indeed if you install 100 of them in a tourist hotspot that means peaks of 5MWh, which again I suspect would take down the whole local electric subsystem and maybe the grid has not even enough capacity in the area. Let's just say that I plan to keep my diesel car as long as economically possible...
