why would taiwan be excited by the US duplicating the industry that makes it unique and desirable? If taiwan didn't manufacture chips, they would be just another island, and I doubt they would receive nearly as much international attention.

"Other Taiwanese executives present voiced hesitation, [...] questioning whether American environmental and labor laws were consistent with the goal of nurturing a sophisticated industry"
A particularly ugly thing to say given how such protections are patchy and quite flawed already.
- rolenthedeep 4y agoDisclaimer: I don't know shit about jack. Taiwan is in a bad spot because they're unique and valuable. China is apparently willing to risk war with the US over Taiwan. It would be in Taiwan's interest for another player to enter the game ans shift attention away from them. If the US builds out chip manufacturing, then Taiwan will be less valuable to China as a political tool. Maybe China will want to invade Taiwan less.
- superchroma 4y agoChina took Tibet which has no significance whatsoever. They are feuding with India about borders. They are trying to undo the meme of the great embarrassment that they have endured under the yoke of western dominance and are taking what they perceive as theirs with much gusto. Rationally, China needs to focus on China. They have an economy propped up with a phantom real estate market, a population that is rapidly aging out and a whole fuckton of poorly made infrastructure that will need increasing amounts of maintenance and repair as time goes by, a lot of which is not justified by the traffic it supports.
