Taiwan’s Tech King to Nancy Pelosi: U.S. Is in over Its Head
- superchroma 4y agowhy would taiwan be excited by the US duplicating the industry that makes it unique and desirable? If taiwan didn't manufacture chips, they would be just another island, and I doubt they would receive nearly as much international attention. Also "Other Taiwanese executives present voiced hesitation, [...] questioning whether American environmental and labor laws were consistent with the goal of nurturing a sophisticated industry" A particularly ugly thing to say given how such protections are patchy and quite flawed already.
- rolenthedeep 4y agoDisclaimer: I don't know shit about jack. Taiwan is in a bad spot because they're unique and valuable. China is apparently willing to risk war with the US over Taiwan. It would be in Taiwan's interest for another player to enter the game ans shift attention away from them. If the US builds out chip manufacturing, then Taiwan will be less valuable to China as a political tool. Maybe China will want to invade Taiwan less.
- superchroma 4y agoChina took Tibet which has no significance whatsoever. They are feuding with India about borders. They are trying to undo the meme of the great embarrassment that they have endured under the yoke of western dominance and are taking what they perceive as theirs with much gusto. Rationally, China needs to focus on China. They have an economy propped up with a phantom real estate market, a population that is rapidly aging out and a whole fuckton of poorly made infrastructure that will need increasing amounts of maintenance and repair as time goes by, a lot of which is not justified by the traffic it supports.
- creato 4y agoIt wasn’t that long ago that US companies led this industry. The quotes in the article are pretty condescending in that light. I’d put 50/50 odds on Intel pulling their heads out of their asses in the next few generations even without government intervention.
- quantified 4y agoThe tech moves fast in this industry, lose 10 years and you're miles behind. As a US citizen, I hope the effort bears fruit even if it's not what we expect. But throwing checks isn't what creates the industry, it's particpant behavior.
- weard_beard 4y agoGreat. If Arizona has water next year it will be host to a massive new chip plant and tens or hundreds of thousands of new people and homes because… Biden needs to win an election. We aught to force his and Pelosis children to live there for 3 generations. Like North Korea. Maybe we’d get some long term planning from these ghouls.
