It sucks. But part of the reason is ecosystem shift. commonjs to esm is a massive shift. esbuild in place of babel is a ground breaking achievement. Vite, which leverages ESM and esbuild, is very different, and better than webpack. The ecosystems which haven't changed, I. E. react and angular, are either in middle of transition or suffering from not doing it.
