I have a friend who keeps his server rack in his unheated detached garage. Works great unless it gets really cold and all the servers shut down due to low input air temperature. Which I never really knew was a thing.
- hinkley 4y agoOne of my regrets is that my house doesn't have a basement with a furnace in it. For years I've had a design in my head to build a data closet next to the furnace, so the cold air return can suck air straight off of the servers in winter, and the closet sucks in air from a duct along the foundation. And now that you can get heat pump water heaters, that strategy would work a bit better still.
