This site is a constant source of the greatest & most interesting things happening in the computing landscape. Even by that standard, this article is simply exceptional.
Its amazing how little change we've seen in interconnect. There's been tons of would-be ideas or ultra-special HPC fabrics, but infiniband is now a tiny segmemt being run entirely by Nvidia (Mellanox) and everyone else is using ethernet.
The article name drops CXL as an interesting space that's kind of finally presenting some ew interconnect ideas, but it's unclear this will scale out much beyond rack size. The once competitor Gen-Z was the one standards based interconnect that seemed interested in potentially spanning data-center sizes. Byt it's now folded in with CXL, & unknown what-if-any ideas/techniques survived the merger. Certainly a number of CXL 3.0 (where CXL gets switches/multi-host for the first time) product-teams have designs that originated in Gen-Z & will namedrop it, but being a fabric not just a peripheral bus seems extremely late-coming to CXL, & reach was not visibly a part of it's design at inception.
I wish Intel's OmniPath had survived. Or anyone that Infiniband had a more vibrant market/adoption. Maybe the death of interconnect is good, that out of this severe lull, the bright hungry folks like thr author of this paper will make somethinf appealing & accessible enough to get adopted, to get hyperscaler & hppefully the world's attention.
