Everyone who wants to work in academia has to make one of these types of claims that there work is related to something politically salient. It doesn’t actually mean anything, and anyone with a decent education knows they don’t mean anything. Yes unfortunately a large portion of the population is uneducated and might not understand the meaninglessness of these statements, but this is an educational problem rather than a problem of expectations. Poorly funded schools don’t properly teach what democracy is and how it works - in our modern era, it has nothing to do with the Greeks and is entirely performative.
