Microsoft is permanently killing off Internet Explorer today
- hulitu 4y agoNothing new here. SSL is killing all old web browsers, while Mozilla, Google and Aplle are killing the ones not so old by rolling versions of standards. "And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space Because there's bugger all down here on Earth" For our security, we burn down our house every year. /s
- wkat4242 4y agoIn the case of IE it's really a derelict ruin that was never built to the proper standard so it's really a good idea to break it down and build a proper house. Having said that I wish browsers would spend more time on optimization and security than redoing the entire UI every couple of years, like Firefox tends to do.
- daveoc64 4y agoAh yes, "permanently". Except on certain versions of Windows.
- pathartl 4y agoAnd except for Edge having a compatibility mode
- wkat4242 4y agoWhich uses the old IE code in fact so it's still there
- sentientslug 4y agoSame as the last (couple?) times it was "permanently" discontinued. I think LTSC has IE for another couple years at least.
- daveslash 4y agoI'm sure that the stand-alone application will be killed, but I highly doubt that the actual rendering and js engines will be excised from the OS entirely. For example, there are a lot of legacy applications out there whose help documentation is in CHTML files [0][1] (*.chm). The CHTML viewer uses IE (unsure of the exact version.... maybe 6?). I can't imagine this going completely away any time soon, so I suspect that the dlls will still reside somewhere in the OS for a long long time to come. Off hand, the Help for WinMerge is leveraging this framework [2]. Edit: I also think that the rendering engine of Outlook uses some legacy version of the IE html/js engines. Again, it might be 6...
