The Story Construction Tells About America’s Economy Is Disturbing
- bob1029 4y agoThe article seems to be touching mostly on the quantity of construction. I've been looking at new SFH builds in the Houston market and I would say that we are absolutely in the toilet on quality as well. Perhaps higher-end and commercial builds are better, but I suspect not. At this point, I don't think I could see myself buying anything built after 2010 or so. It really is death by 1000+ cuts in new construction. Hyper-optimized race to the bottom. Regulations, economy, whatever. It's bad. I was honestly astonished when I finally encountered one 2022 inventory home with all of the handles properly installed on the cabinetry. My current home is 2018 construction and I've already had to replace / repair the following: All interior LED lighting due to aggressive flicker HVAC coil HVAC dehumidifier (actually failed 2x and the contractor installed the wrong thing 3x) Cartridges in all shower fixtures Toilet paper dispensers due to flaking of metallic paint Garbage disposal Dishwasher Dishwasher drain trap (a weekly shopvac experience) Carpet in all rooms due to non-stop off-gassing Garage door opener (2x) Range hood (magic digital buttons failed - I actually have to replace the replacement too) Water heater exhaust ducting (was completely detached) I am probably forgetting a lot of stuff. I could feel my blood pressure climb as I typed this list. I believe the only way to achieve actual quality in 2023 construction seems to be with a custom builder and unlimited budget/time.
