David Singmaster, the great puzzle collector, historian and Rubik's Cube guru, died on Monday morning after a long illness. He was a unique character with an infectious child-like enthusiasm for puzzles of every kind. A visit to David's house was the puzzle equivalent of a trip to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Once there it was almost impossible to leave ("let me just show you this..."). His passing leaves a big hole in the world of recreational maths. RIP David.

This is desperately sad news. I've stayed with David and Deborah, and as Rob says, it was so hard to tear oneself away.
I will certainly miss him.
