I find the intersection of peoples core beliefs adjacent to this subject to be fascinating. Local production, wind/solar, energy efficiency etc is seen as the preserve of the treasonous liberal woke intelligentsia, trying to destroy the economy.
Surely a true patriot and capitalist would want their country to not be subjugated by a foreign nation, would generate the means of running their homes and economy as independently and financially sustainably as possible and try and where possible be at the forefront of any advancements in technology such that you have and maintain a competitive advantage.
- throwayyy479087 4y agoThis is reddit-level thinking. A ton of public conservatives support the movement away from external energy dependence.

- LinuxBender 4y agoBecause the assumption is “you’re rich if you have an EV” I can't speak for your state/country but most of the places I have resided in base the registration cost on the original MSRP of the vehicle then multiply that times a percentages times a number that decreases every year for 5 years and then hits a lower cap. A $70K ICE and a $70K EV should be subject to the same formula. I would expect the EV to at least have some kind of tax rebate unless that's no longer a thing.
- survirtual 4y agoIt is a flat tax in many states. Some have a flat amount billed at registration. Some have a dystopian location-aware mile tracker to give a more accurate read on road usage. This results in a significantly smaller bill, at the cost of giving an opaque entity access to your whereabouts at all times. Tax rebates also do not help incentivize poor people. When I bought my EV, I had already sold my house and was a year removed from my salaried SWE role. While I am not poor, I had no taxable income the year I bought my EV, and therefore did not receive any of the $5000 EV rebate; so it is functionally only an incentive for middle class and above people. There were EV charging credits for some states, but those are / have dried up. The incentives for owning an EV are largely evaporated, and frankly the cost of owning one has been very high. It is only cost effective if you own a home. For renters / travelers using public charging, the situation is increasingly dire, with many places charging more for electricity than the cost of gasoline — without any of the logistical expenses of gasoline. The energy sector is in dire need of reform, and the grid in dire need of mass modernization.
- throwayyy479087 4y agoI mean this with kindness - you seem very, very angry and should consider talking to someone. This is a lot for a response arguing in favor of loving your fellow countrymen.
- survirtual 4y agoI have a right to be angry, though that was not written with anger. I believed in a country enough to join its military and be deployed, only to find it was all a lie. People I know died to enrich oil companies and the military industrial complex. I’ve reduced my consumption to the bare minimum. No home and few possessions, and spent a large chunk of my savings buying an EV because when I think about using oil, I see the blood on my hands. I’ve worn the same clothes (shifting undergarments daily obviously) for over 4 years now and got a vasectomy to prevent perpetuating the cycle of suffering. These are the lengths I gladly go because of these things. But I live in a country of people who can’t be bothered to make even the most minimal of sacrifice or change, who smile and tell me “thank you for your service” while wasting precious non-renewable resources that poison and pollute the land, acquired with the deposit of blood from my brothers & sisters & true countrymen, without reserve. To fit in. To feel big and bad. And very, very rarely for actual functional purpose. Turning the blood of my people into a fun time. And these are the very same people that, while living in practical mansions while their children are increasingly homeless & jobless & futureless, pass misguided policy like an EV tax. I try and talk on HN with a level head. But what I am talking about now should make any rational mind objectively furious. I love my fellow man — but love the infinite cosmic future of man more, with trillions of humans spread throughout the cosmos. I would never jeopardize that as all these people around us now are; misguided souls.
