Contra Kavanagh on Fideism
- h2odragon 4y agoThe counter argument is, of course, to shout about how Scott has gone completely off the deep end and proclaimed his belief in Atlantis. The problem is that some of your opponents really do think "rationality" is Wrong in the Biblical Evil kind of sense, I think. They don't proclaim it in such bald terms but they've got these consistent arguments that sum up to their ideal society consisting of friction-less spherical cows.
- kalimanzaro 4y agoApologies but I amquite confused by your pronouns. Whom had whose ideal society summed up? Do the spherical cows belong to the rationalists or their opponents? Just wondering if I can meme up "cow spherers vs flat earthers" :) or
- h2odragon 4y agothe flat earthers, spherical cow people, and rationalists are all seperate poles arguing with each other. Some, but not all, of each camp has Evil versions of the base ideas. Then add in a few dozen more factions and make each individual not a member of any single faction, but an ice cream swirl of all of them. None of them staying the same pattern for more than a moment. The analogies are confusing because the situation being discussed is complicated, confusing, and never static.
