Ask HN: How do you manage your personal projects
Recently I've started a personal project that's begun to take up a significant amount of brain space.
It's gotten complicated enough that I've started "dropping" parts of it mentally, and it's hard to find those pieces and pick them back up again.
In my career, I've used every kind of team & project management ware under the sun, and I have a hard time conceiving adapting something like the Asana suite to just my personal workflow.
So, HN - how do you manage your personal projects?
- pwg 4y agoA directory in a projects dir that is in my $HOME dir. Whatever is related to that project goes into that directory.
- ChilledTonic 4y agoDo you simply track everything in the Readme.md file, or some other system of documentation?
- pwg 4y agoDepends upon what 'project' the project dir is for. As for format, mostly just plain text files, except for where other formats are necessary (i.e., datasheet pdf's for a hardware project dir, etc.). Various sub-directories as needed for organization. Meaningful names for most files/directories.
- mindcrime 4y agoMediawiki for documentation and "scratchpad" stuff, notes, product plans, etc. Bugzilla for more tactical "todo" stuff. Note that my Bugzilla usage is such that "items" are not necessarily "bugs". Some are, in fact, actual bugs, but I use it as a more general purpose "todo list" and not just a bug tracker. SuiteCRM for managing leads, contacts, marketing campaign stuff, etc. Actual code is, of course, in Git and for now at least uses Github.
