They run our lives with far too little accountability. Your fears are well founded, however. Alignment and AI safety is not even slightly solved yet, the worst case scenario is a world ending event, and we have no way to measure to likelihood of that happening. There have been coordinated efforts around this discussion for a long time, and especially so in the past decade.
