    Being an extreme earner probably requires one to focus on that a lot, which doesn't seem smart in any way.

The analysis shows that, up to a certain point, there is an almost linear relationship between cognitive ability and wage. Then, for those with the highest cognitive ability, the relationship plateaus ie they earn a wide variety of wages (though all are higher than those of lower cognitive ability). So, it still says smart people earn more. It's just pointing out that whether they earn 60k EUR or 100k EUR doesn't appear to be correlated to cognitive ability.
