Interesting (and congratulations to boot). I’m glad you had fun with Objective C; I would have personally gone with Swift.
Which is deeply ironic, because I spent 20 years becoming quite adept at Smalltalk (an inspiration to Brad Cox and company when designing ObjectiveC). And while happy writing C code when needed, I really loathe the look-I-climbed-a-hill-ma complexity that is C++.
ObjectiveC was really comforting to me when I jumped out of the Smalltalk baloon, but it soured quickly. It was sooo verbose, and discordant. Imagine two of the most dissimilar spoken languages with different vocabularies and grammars. Now speak both, but you have to flip back and forth, usually mid sentence. It just made bit paradigms less than half of what they were originally.
I was more excited about Swift in the earlier days. It seemed like an “if I have to do C++, this would be a nice simplification.” Over time, it has packed on complexity and edge cases. So it has soured slowly. When you keep using sugar to sweeten your syntax it’s usually a smell that your hiding something less tasteful below.
But given the fact that it currently has the mantle of “The Way”, for me the choice tips to Swift.
Again, congratulation on your achievement.
- graderjs 4y agoThank you! I really like your discourse about changing experience of programming languages over time, and the sour/sweet metaphors you use. Plus "This is the Way"! > I really loathe the look-I-climbed-a-hill-ma complexity that is C++ Hahaha 20 years becoming quite adept at Smalltalk?
