Getting into one of the major app stores (or, I suppose, something like the official Debian repos?) is a great feeling, akin to the first time one puts up a web page and anyone in the world can see it (is this still thrilling, in the age of Instagram and such? It sure was before all that). Congrats!
> I had no idea about Objective-C before this, but actually I find quite enjoyable now and the syntax no longer seems so crazy wrong and it’s actually kind of cool.
Yeah, I think that's literally everyone's first experience with Obj-C. "WTF is this shit?" [some time passes] "Oh, huh, this isn't so bad, I may actually like it...."
> So then I had to dive into the whole codesigning thing and understand how things need to be signed with the different certificates, and what provisioning profiles were, and what kind of entitlements might be needed--and then having to debug how different hardened runtime and sandbox entitlements and effects, interacted with assumptions and capabilities of the underlying binary file, including file access and instructions and so on.
Don't feel bad if this keeps feeling rough, I've been doing iOS development off-and-on since like 2011 and still feel like I'm having to figure this crap out from scratch nearly every time it comes up. Or, IDK, maybe you'll be lucky and it'll just click for you, permanently (I've yet to know a person for whom that's true, but perhaps they exist). It's certainly a lot less painful now (simple cases are now nearly automatic—until they break for seemingly no reason, and you're back to doing a rain-dance and hoping it fixes everything)
> There’s something about this idea that you can create something and put it on to a store that’s available 24/7 and also that that thing that you create has gone through all these like gauntlets and jumped through the hoops so you know it’s in some sort of precise pristine state.
Validation. Like getting your fiction published by a traditional publisher, or in a paying periodical/journal market. Sure, they're bullshit and everything, ha ha, as if they still matter, LOL, who needs them, right? But damn does it feel good. You made the cut.
- graderjs 4y agoThank you! That's encouraging :) > you're back to doing a rain-dance and hoping it fixes everything hahaha You've been doing iOS off-and-on since 2011?
- yamtaddle 4y ago> You've been doing iOS off-and-on since 2011? Yep. I've even built from-scratch (for general use by paying clients, even!) or configured existing CI systems to automate builds and signing—and still feel like I'm having to re-learn the damn signing system every time it comes up, LOL.
