i've come across any number of consultants who simply conspire with management to get what management wants in the short-term, usually to the ultimate detriment of the project. mind you, i've been a consultant myself (and i used to work for deloitte, though not as a consultant). not my favourite job, but i like to think i was honest in my recommendations.
