To me its an indicator of a dying business. For all the hate they get, the only movies worth seeing are ${big budget} movies anyway because why pay $20 to watch 30 minutes of ads which are on youtube, to see some dark quiet oscar candidate, while I can't pause or go to the bathroom for hours after paying $10 for pepsi?
If I'm paying and leaving my couch it has to be for an experience I can't get. This is just abuse masquerading as profit maximization.
Movie theaters are lame, I don't care what Spielberg or Nolan think I should want.
