New Montana Bill Would Prevent Schools Teaching “Scientific Theories”
- sharemywin 4y agoWonder how they feel about Newton's laws of motion and gravity?
- allears 4y agoNaw, those aren't laws, they're only theories.
- ColinWright 4y ago> "Wonder how they feel about Newton's laws of motion and gravity?" "Gravity" is explicitly mentioned in the article: "In passing the bill, Montana would prevent any scientific ideas that are not established as 'facts' -- which would bar the teaching of evolution, gravity, and other integral ideas that form the basis of scientific knowledge today."
- sharemywin 4y agothere goes social studies. sorry capitalism I guess your out.
- guywithahat 4y ago> WHEREAS, the purpose of K-12 education is to educate children in the facts of our world to better prepare them for their future and further education in their chosen field of study, and to that end children must know the difference between scientific fact and scientific theory; and > WHEREAS, a scientific fact is observable and repeatable, and if it does not meet these criteria, it is a theory that is defined as speculation and is for higher education to explore, debate, and test to ultimately reach a scientific conclusion of fact or fiction So they're trying to ban things from being taught in schools that aren't repeatable or are too controversial. In spirit this seems like a good idea, although I have to wonder who defines controversial and how this will play out. It also hasn't really gone anywhere and nothing has happened with it
- hw-guy 4y agoThe governor, Greg Gianforte, used to be a really smart Bell Labs engineer. Maybe after moving to Montana and getting involved in politics, he decided that he had to dumb himself down to fit in.
