Technically, this is a success right? Since brexit was all about curbing people/goods going to britain, which should lead to some imaginary benefits that still have to materialize somehow?
AFAIK a nation can only increase wealth/welfare if its either full of valuable resources (like middle east or norway) or becomes a international hub that attracts successful people/businesses. The latter one might need the exact opposite of brexit, though, so I am still waiting what valuable resource will do the trick for britain
- mytailorisrich 4y agoThe overall number of international students in the UK keeps going up [1] and they can be charged the full amount "the market will bear", so I don't see that there is a negative impact for the UK here, which is still highly attractive according to the numbers. The negative impact is borne by students from the EU who now have to pay in full if they want to study in the UK. - mamonster 4y agoOr you could heavily industrialize by imposing massive protections for your nascent domestic industry, which is how U.S became an industrial powerhouse in the first place. In fact part of the reason why U.S went to war in the first place was because Britain was quite content using it as a raw material hub and Alexander Hamilton himself was explicit in stating this argument. Recently you can also look at what China has done as well, most of the strategic industries were massively subsidized by the state.
