Naomi Wolf – The Pain of Listening to Twitter Censorship Testimony
- ggm 4y agoAll I can say is that modern times has made for some remarkably strange bedfellows. (and no, there is no implied sexual objectification towards Ms Wolf expressed there, its a common english-language expression for 'fellow travellers') Naomi Wolf owns a lot of her misfortune. She was an interesting writer, who found lax journalistic models of "the underlying truth" destroyed trust in her stories, and then like many other people with fame in their hearts she doubled-down. It doesn't mean I approve of Twitter, then or now, or what happened to her. But, to lay all of what happened to her at the door of twitter and to go to "it was the government out to get me" is .. well it's lax journalistic models of the "underlying truth" so I guess it's consistent. But to wind up in the same boat as Musk and Trump, thats a really strange arc of connection. I really liked "the Beauty Myth" -and I don't think I'll stop liking it, just because she went on to a pretty odd place. It's not that dissimilar to how I feel about Janet Malcolm: she pretty much wrecked the truth in search of a damn good story. Lots of writers wind up there, along different paths. (maybe "the truth" isn't the phrase I'm looking for. Objectively, I don't think everything she says about her own situation and why Twitter shut her down is correct)
