It doesn't have to deliver 10gb/sec to be worthwhile. 3 gbps is easy and already more than a 2.5GbE link can handle. And the prices for those switches still exceed what's available used for 10gbps.
I've got an ICX7250-24p at home that cost about $200 from ebay. That's 24 ports of PoE gigabit, plus 8 SFP+ ports for 10gig. Noise and power are quite reasonable, though it doesn't belong on the desk next to you.
