There is a very good review of this era in Christensen's book "Innovator's Dilemma".
Over several iterations of smaller and smaller hard drives, the esconced manufacturers were blind-sided by the innovators who produced the newer, physically smaller and faster hard drives.
There was a cycle of 'in' hard-drive manufacturers as the older companies went under due to challenges from the younger companies.
Fascinatiing read. Well worth your time.
