  More simply, it could have been an act by the army to torpedo improving relations between the US and China. The more strained the relations, the easier it would be to get funding for military projects.

    Given the political climate there, doesn’t that seem like a fast track to the gallows for said military officers that went ahead without permission?

    Because the US is already at war with Russia in Ukraine and in Syria. Now they want a war with China too.

  I found this whole issue confusing. If the balloon was a deliberate attempt at spying, why was it made with solar panels and not batteries? That thing must have had the radar cross section of a school bus. Also why wasn't the balloon envelope clear? It just seems so odd to assume this was supposed to go undetected.

    They could be testing the US ability to detect such objects.
