I was very sad when XUL disappeared from Firefox - I had written a serial plugin in c++ via XPCOM, which had allowed us to more easily test and deal with firmware updates in the hardware we ran, and having XUL in Firefox meant for fairly quick and lightweight touchscreen applications that could be shipped to customers with very low hardware requirements, nothing like you'd need for electron today. these were for point-of-decision kiosks, and were so easy to build and maintain, truly a great era.
