The same would have hypothetically been true for plenty of sites like Stack Overflow.. Which is an example that sites themselves penalize anonymous internal search over fresh Google search. Controlling the search pages is of low value compared to staying fixed at the top of Google searches (thanks to obfuscated interaction rankings) by having a lot of people who search dozens of times a day always selecting only your page in Google's responses and of course never applying captcha to a new visitor from Google.
