MS changed focus from small and medium shops into "enterprise" and big-market. They want to be the New IBM (per 1970's and 80's). While MS's GUI engines got more powerful, the learning curve also grew. It wasn't a free lunch: UI featuritus hurt smaller shops. WinForms still has the easiest learning curve of their GUI products for rank-and-file CRUD, despite lacking some allegedly modern UI features.
