  They (finances, hft, hedges) pay significantly more than FAANG, mostly with plain cash too.

  The finance sector has lots of bespoke C++ code driving for example hedge funds, even real time trading and C++ coders are aging and retiring... They certainly pay better, upfront, than a startup does.
