What. Employees can quit, which is synonymous to firing the boss.
Maybe the bit about software design was correct, but the first two sections incorrectly explaining game theory don’t give me much confidence.
- nerbert 4y agoBoss fires the employee: employee loses the salary. Employee fires the boss: employee loses the salary.
- P_I_Staker 4y agoI'm not on the other side of this argument, but this is often plainly untrue. Employee fires boss, employee makes more money, boss loses work, pays tons of money, and then pays a higher salary. I do agree about the power imbalance though.
- cjbgkagh 4y agoPresumably the boss was gaining more value from work done than the cost and the employee could try for a job elsewhere.
- kbutler 4y agoSo, why doesn't the boss always fire all employees and not pay any salaries?
- bryanrasmussen 4y agoIf there is one thing I've learned from reading all the comments on HN it is that management is stupid.
- SturgeonsLaw 4y agoEveryone knows that the devs are the smartest guys in the room Source: the devs
- Mechanical9 4y ago> What. Employees can quit, which is synonymous to firing the boss. I disagree, quitting is not synonymous with firing the boss. When you leave, the company and your boss retain everything you built. You forfeit your stock options. Finding a new job isn't always trivial, either. Changing jobs and possibly changing locations is expensive.
- ghiculescu 4y agoAl these can be flipped. Replacing a lost employee is expensive too. The boss forfeits the employee’s domain knowledge. The employee retains all the money they were paid. They aren’t perfectly equivalent, but there’s a strong parallel between the two, which is why transactional employment relationships work.
- bryanrasmussen 4y agowhen the boss interviews new hires and gets asked why the position is open he has to come up with a nice way to say my last employee quit on me.
- DoughnutHole 4y agoOr lie, which is probably easier.
- bryanrasmussen 4y agoyeah, I was being facetious because the boss doesn't really get asked and can lie, the fired employee has to come up with a good explanation for why they were fired. Since the discussion was about ways in which there are differences between being fired and quitting.
- squeaky-clean 4y agoI've had some jobs where it would be real nice if you could've just replaced our boss but kept the dev team and project.
