My friends took a container ship across the Pacific (and later another one across the Atlantic) as passengers. This is regularly commercially available (!) and apparently quite fascinating, although it takes a week or two to cross an ocean and is potentially much less comfortable than a cruise ship, and you also apparently have to negotiate it with a broker rather than just booking a ticket on a web site.
Here's Wikivoyage on the subject:

- Llamamoe 4y agoWhat kind of price range are we talking about here?
- schoen 4y agoMy impression was that it was about $1500 per person to cross the Atlantic about ten years ago (including food and lodging). But I don't remember very clearly... Wikivoyage says > There are some agents arranging trips, who charge around US$75–100 (€100–120) a day. I assume this means that the customer has to pay that much (rather than that this is describing a commission or surcharge). On the other hand, I looked at the edit history briefly and this particular information seems to come from about 15 years ago.
